“SMALL-BATCH, ROBUST FLAVOUR,
AND SCORCHING HEAT IN A BOTTLE”
— Fired Up FoodsWe’re back with a new edition of Munggo Mundo! We’re excited to share the story of Fired Up Foods, a Mississauga owned small business created by the dynamic duo, Jon and Nikki Cabatan. We’re no Shawn Evans, but we had the wonderful opportunity to do a deep dive into Jon and Nikki’s “pandemic baby”; we learned more about their passions and what fueled them to start their fiery business (with final dab questions and all!)Fired Up Foods became a way to share their various hot sauce flavours and pay homage to each other’s own cultures and traditions with flavours rooted in lived experiences. Their creativity, expressive personalities, and sense of adventure really shines through in their product and branding!

“As far as our small biz is concerned, we launched it in September of 2020 (definitely a Pandemic Baby 😅) but the work was really being done six years prior. My (Nikki) side of the family is Trinidadian and Jon would grow hot peppers each summer and make a hot sauce in hopes of impressing my very stubborn and opinionated matriarch of a Grandmother. After 6 years, we got feedback on a blend of hot sauce - "it's okay" were get exact words - and that emphatic encouragement fueled us 😂Since then, we have launched 5 (five) sauces in the past year, Sarap Sauce being our third and most personal. We were fortunate to have visited The Philippines in January 2020 so our memories and palates were pretty fresh!”How does your culture and background influence you as a small business owner?“Jon wanted to create a sauce that encompassed all the flavours of his paternal homeland and he tested batch after batch. He finally landed on this recipe and was so proud to honour his culture in this way. It's why we call it a "love letter" to The Philippines. We collaborated with our friend, a Filipina graphic designer and tattoo artist based in Toronto and had recurring meetings talking out the design for the label. Every space on the label has a deep-rooted meaning and nod to the indigenous culture of the islands.”We were reading your website and noticed how punchy it was which is definitely fitting for a hot sauce brand. You both seem to have super cool interests from playing bass, hiphop, to DIYs! How has your ‘appetite for adventure’ for adventure influenced your business?“I would say that a mix of confidence, risk-taking and ensuring we spend our time doing what we WANT to do makes for a brand and product line that resonates positively. Never saying ’no’ right away and instead give serious consideration to any and all ideas, no matter how far-fetched. Being adventurous in new endeavours is easy when you have the perfect partner to enjoy the ride with!”I love that! I can totally relate as well with that. Especially growing up in a filipino household we kind of had to step outside the bounds to see what we could achieve or what those possibilities even were. Do you have any advice for people looking to follow their passions or are struggling to get started?“Yes! We are all individuals with unique talents, and skills. Nurturing passions, developing one's own perspective and growing confidence are really important to encourage, especially as first generation Canadians. And, be proud of our culture! Growing up, it was a source of perhaps mild embarrassment and I wish I took the time to embrace the culture, language, and everything in between. [I’m] so grateful to come from such a place with such rich traditions and the warmest people! ”

Jon and Nikki’s story is a great example of what can happen when you take a passion project, and explore the possibilities for growing into a thriving business. Fired Up Foods not only provides delicious hot sauces, but through the explorative formulations and fun collaborations with various artists for packaging designs, they’ve been able to share what makes their community so unique, and express the positivity with their consumers. We can’t wait to see what new adventures Fired Up Foods will share, one batch of sauce at a time!
